memory of Enamaa Boat Disaster Victims
Enamaa Boat Disaster .. a
year on

disasters in Maldives occurred last year
.
A year on, family of the tens of victims from Thinadhoo

how much money was collected and what benefits the
victims had from it. Listed below are relevant articles
that were published on the day and after the incident.
No report has been publish
nor has there been an investigation into the cause of
this worst recorded sea disaster in the country such is
the unprofessionally of Gayyoom and his incompetent

Fathalhey makes plans to
promote Islam and Dhivehi education for Maldivian
students in Sri Lanka
The High Commission of the
Republic of Maldives in Sri Lanka has been posting
several letters to a number of homes where Maldivians
reside in Sri Lanka. The letter state that any parents
who would like there children to be taught Dhivehi and
Islam, especially for those children who miss the
subjects in Male’ to attend the classes that will be
held at the High Commission of the Republic of Maldives
in Sri Lanka. It all sounds nice and neat, but who is
the master mind behind it? Who benefits from it? How
much $$$ is behind it? Of course he does not need an
introduction, he is Mr. Fathulla Jameel (aka Fathalhey)
the foreign minister of Maldives, who have had held his
position since 1978 when Gayoom took office.
Since Rashida Yousuf left
her post at the High Commission of the Republic of
Maldives in Sri Lanka, Dr. Mohamed Asim took over her
post and has been really working on it with his heart
and soul to what Rashida has damaged. However, Dr. Asim
did manage to keep a low profile and all out of the
blues have had sent so many letters to a lot of
Maldivians living in Sri Lanka. This is the exact
problems with some Maldivians when they get too much
money, first they need money and then they want a name.
Asim finally turned out to be one of Gayoom’s salve, but
then again he very well managed to keep a low profile
for quite sometime…

High
Court case against Yameen scheduled for 20th March
The
case of Ibrahim Hussain Landhoo Vs. Mighty Yameen Abdul
Gayyoom (aka Raagondi Raajaa) has been rescheduled for
the 20th March.
The
case was supposed to be heard 6th March but was
postponed without notice.
Mr. Ibrahim Hussain from Landhoo brought up the case against
Yameen due to the infamous election speech he gave in N.
Milandhoo in January. Giving public speeches by
candidates is prohibited during campaigning. The
recordings and scripts of this speech has been leaked by
DO in January and hence there appears to be no way out
for Yameen from this because of this staggering
evidence. However, after all he is the brother of
Gayyoom, so nothing will happen to him as far as most
Maldivians are concerned. No one is above the law said
Gayyoom on the BBC in August 2004, so this will be a big
test for Gayyoom and his regime as a whole.
Public will be allowed in if they go there on time with
ID cards but sadly there are about 30 seats there for
the public.
The High Court is located near Voice of Maldives in
Henveiru near the Tripod Square.
The court is expected to
dismiss the case because on the basis that "it is simply
not true!". The judge will not say that Landhoo Ibrahim
is "lying but not well informed" about who Yameen is and
how he is "ebau dhi loa" as he is after all the dearest
of all brothers of Gayyoom, the Ruthless Godly Dictator.

Maldives gets $14M in World Bank aid
WASHINGTON -- The World
Bank Thursday approved $14 million in aid to help the
Maldives recover from last December's tsunami
destruction.
The bank said the Maldives needs about $304 million in
total to get the country's economy back on its feet.
Part of the latest loan will be used to help families
provide for their immediate needs, including food and
housing, while another part will be used to improve
schools.
Of the total, $5.6 million will come as a grant, while
the remaining $8.4 million will be charged an interest
rate of 0.75 percent payable over a 35-year period,
including a 10-year grace period.

Quake threat rises after
tsunami slip
Nearby faults are under
increased strain after December's catastrophe
The huge earthquake that caused the Indian Ocean tsunami
has increased the stress on neighbouring fault lines,
experts have calculated. The knock-on effect could be
another large earthquake in Sumatra or even another
tsunami, they warn.
Seismologists have studied the fault lines around the
Burma microplate, whose border with the Indian plate was
the scene of the huge jolt in December 2004. Using a
mathematical model, they conclude that the increased
strain on the neighbouring Sumatra fault, which runs
through the island itself, makes Sumatra the most likely
place for a subsequent earthquake.

New Asian quake threat warning
A build-up of stress on faults in Sumatra following the
Indonesian earthquake is likely to trigger another large
quake and perhaps a tsunami. That is the claim made in
Nature by a team from the University of Ulster, UK.
The slip that caused last year's devastating quake
placed increased stress on the Sumatran fault and on the
adjacent undersea Sunda Trench.
A new rupture could trigger a magnitude 7-7.5 quake on
land and a magnitude 8-8.5 quake beneath the sea, they
say.

"Throughout the 1990s, we saw that a number of other
countries had technically qualified for graduation. Yet,
in every case, a closer look at the circumstances
warranted their continued inclusion in the LDC list. It
is not surprising that all of these states are island
states. It is high time that the anomalies were taken
seriously so that the criteria used in identifying LDCs
are refined to provide a more accurate picture of the
real situation. Otherwise, the propensity for a
miscarriage of justice is likely to be very high and
could inflict a very severe penalty on a country that
does not have the economic resilience to suffer the
kinds of external shocks that graduation would impose."

Gayyoom abuses Islam to sustain dictatorship in Maldives
In
chapter 1 and section 7, the existing constitution of
the Maldives proclaims that Islam is the state religion.
It means that the State as a legal being is a Moslem. By
implication, therefore, any act of, or done on behalf
of, the state that violates an Islamic principle would
also be a breach of the constitution, for it is like
trying to convert the State to a non-Moslem which is
clearly against the constitution. The state or the
government of the present time does not tolerate its
people violating some principles of Islam, but ignores
its own violations of the same Islamic teachings. The
reader must recall that violation of the constitution is
the highest treason in the Maldives.

"The report is good news for the Maldives, indicating
the tsunami had minimal impact on the country's coral

people to know is that the material on DO are aimed at
eliminating and discouraging corruption and unethical

most famous style of interrogation is to torture them
sexually.
"He usually bends people and after taking their cloths

said a prisoner who spent 6 months at the mercy of Lady
Ibrahim Manik. Most of his victims are too ashamed to

Ibrahim Mohamed still in intensive care
According
to family members, Ibrahim Mohamed is still in a very
critical condition. Ibrahim was apprehended in MPA
whilst working there. He is a crane driver and he has
drugs on him when he was caught so he admitted to the
crime there and then. However, Police still interrogated
him and beat him up during then.
It is reported that the commission members have already
met him. He is unable to talk because of shortness of
breadth. His family members are very upset and some have
forcefully gone inside the ICU unit in IGMH Hospital as
only the father and his wife are allowed in by the
police. The area is heavily guarded. The family has
requested to take him abroad but the police have refused
to grant permission despite his condition.

Mirror on the FAM wall, Maumoon is the Fairest of us all
If
someone asks my 4 year daughter, “whose photo’s are most printed and hanged on
the most walls?” she will answer Maumoon. That’s so obvious that Maumoon’s photo
should be there in the every building wall of Maldives. The most recent building
opened in Maldives is Football Association building. After a hard talk between
FAM and Ministry of Sports they agreed to give a land to FAM to build the new
building which was fund by FIFA. After two months the building opened I went
there to meet a friend of mine who works as FAM coach. When I entered the
building the first thing I saw was a Maumoon’s photo on the wall. This is so
obvious that which ever building you enter in Maldives the first thing you must
see is his nice picture. All the schools, offices and hospitals simply I can say
everywhere in Maldives. But when I saw it on FAM building I started to think
about it and looked around for some other photos from may be the football hero’s
of Maldives. But to be honest I couldn’t find any.

Lady
Ibrahim Manik, in charge of Dhoonidhoo must be
immediately suspended
After mounting allegation
of torture and murder at Dhoonidhoo Prison it is
important for Gayyoom to suspend Lady Ibrahim Manik, who
is the security in charge in the prison. However, it
seems that Gayyoom is unable to lead and take corrective
actions to ensure that people are treated humanely in
his prisons and whilst in detention in the Police HQ in
Male’.
Lady Ibrahim Manik is very
well known for his brutality and is believe to take part
in torturing prisoners and detainees. Protected by his
boss, Commissioner Adam Zahir, Lady Ibrahim Manik is
believed to be untouchable.
If Gayyoom wants to make
people believe that he means well by setting up yet
another commission to investigate torture by police
during interrogation, he should take this advice.

Chairman Nasheed (Anni) denied a Maldivian Passport by
Gayyoom
Colombo - MDP sources have
reported that its Chairman Mohamed Nasheed's (Anni)
schedule return to home tomorrow has now be delayed
because Gayyoom has refused to issue Anni a Maldivian
Passport. Anni currently travels with a UK Travel
Document which does not allow him to travel to the
Maldives as he has political asylum from the UK.
Anni is trying hard to
resolve the matter and re-schedule his visit.
Many Maldivians have been
waiting to welcome him back to Maldives. Anni fled
Maldives in September 2003 after the unrest in Male' and
has been actively engaged in the forming and running of
Maldivian Democratic Party.
Anni expects to be in
Male' before the end of the month as it will take around
10 days to get his old passport back from the UK

Two
persons are critically injured and admitted to the
hospital after today's unrest in Male'
A young lady, Fathimath Humra, M. Windscreen was
attacked by a cutter-knife yesterday by a couple of drug
addicts near her home, which is known in Male’ as the BG
group area. Police in Male' has not been paying
attention to the acts of these drug addicts because
Gayyoom’s brother Yameen and Chief of Police Adam Zahir
both use these youngsters to create lawlessness and
create fear amongst the people.
As a result of negligence by police, BG group had
reportedly took matters to their own hands and severely
beat up two of the perpetrators today. Reports are now
coming that these two persons are critically injured and
in intensive care at IGMH hospital.
Cutter-knife attacks have been common in Maldives in
recent months, which included several incidents in Lh.
Naifaru and Addu Atoll as well as many in the capital
island Male'.
In a small country of less than 300,000 people there are
an estimated 30,000 heroine addicts, who use a low grade
heroine known as Brown Sugar. Users of Brown Sugar in
Maldives are commonly referred to as Paateys. Several of
these addicts have been killed in custody, like Evan
Naseem who was beaten to death and Abdulla Ameen who was
shot in the head in September 2003. Last week, another
drug user was allegedly killed, Muaviyath Mahmoodh and
another user is now in intensive care today.
If Gayyoom cannot control the people and anarchy is
allowed to spread, he must step down immediately and let
the country be salvaged.
"This lawlessness is the creation of Gayyoom himself!"
said Mohamed Hassan, a resident of Male’ who witnessed
all these activities today.

There
is a split between Gayyoom and Adam Zahir?
Male' - There is
increasing rumours of a rift between Adam Zahir and
Gayyoom according to senior officials of the regime.
This is partly related to the death of Muaviyath
Mahmoodh last week and another detainee Ibrahim Mohamed
being tortured and currently in intensive care. Bother
were detained in the notorious Dhoonidhoo prison for
interrogation when the incidents occurred. The officials
said that it makes sense that Gayyoom would be furious
about these incidents because public unrest is now at an
all time high after witnessing and hearing about these
inhumane acts of cruelty, which Gayyoom could do without
because he is projecting himself to be the peoples’
president and the keeper of peace and stability in
Maldives, mostly to the wider world.
However, Gayyoom does not
wield the power of guts to take action against the
perpetrators and the chief torturers, like Adam Zahir
because Gayyoom needs him to remain in power. Only time
will tell what is to be the fate of Adam Zahir or
Gayyoom but it is safe to assume that they are not happy
with each other.
Who is going to sack whom
then? Obviously Gayyoom can’t sack Adam Zahir, so can
Adam Zahir sack Gayyoom?

Gayyoom
creating lawlessness for Anni's arrival
Male' - Insiders in Paatey Groups, controlled by Gayyoom
through his brother Yameen and other cabinet ministers,
have confirmed that they have had direct instruction
from Adam Zahir to create lawlessness in Male' for
Anni's arrival. It is believed that several hundred
people are going to receive Anni from the air port and
these Paatey's now have a free hand to do whatever they
want and begin fights within the crowd just like Black
Friday last year.
An
analyst said "I fear for Anni's life, I think it is
going be a lot of trouble when he comes and this is what
Gayyoom wants. He is creating infighting amongst the
people and project to the world the we Maldivians are
violent and uncivilised. This is very bad."

Another prisoner Ibrahim Mohamed in Intensive Care Unit
at IGMH
Male' - Ibrahim Mohamed was brought to the hospital on
Saturday after he collapsed as a result of injuries
sustained during interrogation at Dhoonidhoo Prison. He
was reported arrested for drug dealing and was caught
red handed.
"It is not known why police had to torture him to get a
confession out of him, he was caught red handed" said a
family member. "This is just too much for us to handle"
he went on to add. "Now only his father and wife can see
him inside the ICU and we have been told that he has
serious injuries all over his body because he has been
beaten with boots and iron bars. It looks like the
authority is refusing to let him be taken abroad for
treatment" reported the family member.
Minivan news also reported that he has severe injuries.
Ibrahim had visible bruises, swelling and wounds,
including cuff marks, bruises on his neck as a result of
strangling and bruises on his back, arms, chest, stomach
and knees. It has been reported that Ibrahim was
initially brought to the hospital because he was
bleeding excessively from his genitals and anus. He is
presently unable to eat and that he vomits upon
consuming any food.
Ibrahim’s wife attempted to see her husband at 10am on
Saturday but was initially prevented from doing so by
the police at the hospital who were guarding the body.
The police also refused to tell Ibrahim’s wife the
condition of her husband. However, after having been
questioned by the police for over an hour, she was
finally allowed to see Ibrahim. “Ibrahim was conscious
and able to talk when I met him. He described the
incidents of beatings in Dhoonidhoo very vividly;
policemen running from a distance and throwing flying
kicks at his chest and stomach, hitting detainee on his
head with chairs, hitting detainee’s head against walls,
pulling detainee’s hair, hitting detainee on the chest
with elbows amongst other things.”
Ibrahim's wife further reported that to her knowledge,
at least two or three urine investigations have been
carried out since the detainee was hospitalized, but
that she has not been told the extent of her husband’s
injuries. Ibrahim's brother also died in prison 3
years ago, who allegedly committed suicide but the
family has not accepted that statement from the police.
DO
can confirm that the newly appointed 3 member commission
was setup to investigate the case of Ibrahim Mohamed and
not the recent death of Muaviyath Mahmoodh. Gayyoom's
acting more like head of state when he announced this
commission, referring to governments' torture, as in he
has nothing to do with it.

Readers’ Opinion
We want a simple President
According to our history any person after becoming the
president of a small country like Maldives for the first
few months or years he will be standing at a junction
and looking around to find out anybody smiling at him.
That is the beginning of building his solar-system. Then
he will start of thinking of who and who to be chosen as
planets of the solar system that will orbit him, the
star with absolute submission. The most successful will
be those who have the cunningness and lack of principle
to flatter him blindfolded on each and every occasion.

Mass
demonstration on the street of Male' and other larger
islands is the only way to remove Gayyoom from power
The public outcry on September 19th 2003
after witnessing the brutal murders of Evan Naseem and
his colleagues like Abdulla Ameen was extraordinary.
Gayyoom's brutality was fully exposed that day and ever
since there has been vocal criticism and organised
opposition against him. His image of a benevolent leader
is no longer the case and world over now know what kind
of a ruthless dictator he is. However, to this day,
people are still waiting for him change or even step
down but everyone knows that Gayyoom has no intention to
surrender his palaces and other amenities and everything
indicates that he wants to cling on to power for as long
as he can and pass the reign of power to his daughter Dunya Maumoom. Even international political analysts
have made this prediction.

Again
Gayyoom has killed another Maldivian in Prison
It is heartbreaking for all Maldivian to see that again
Gayyoom’s notorious NSS have killed another innocent
Maldivian youth.
I don’t see a single explanation how dictator Gayyoom is
going to explain Muaaviyath Mahmoodh (photo right)
murder in the hands of NSS in Dhoonidhoo torture
chamber. The picture’s gives very clear evidence that
Muaaviyath was tortured.

Aamira
on Olympic track Athens 2004
By reading the heading of
this article headline most of the people will be
wondering who this Aamira is and how did she get to go
to the Athens 2004 Olympic Games.
Well I’m talking about the Aamira who never did a sports
management or who is not qualified even for her job as a
principle of the only A/L teaching school in Maldives,
CHSE. In short words, when I say two-two’s wife most of
the Maldivian will know who I mean.

Maldivian terror prisoner
Fauzee returns from Guantanamo Bay
Male' - Fauzee has been
released from Guantanamo Bay prison and is now back in
Maldives. Local media is giving him much exposure as if
he is a national hero. It is known that Gayyoom's
security forces is not interested in interrogating him
and will likely blame the Americans for holding him in
the prison.
Gayyoom is expected to go
for a photo shoot with Fauzee or perhaps throw a
reception for him. Fauzee should spend a few months in
Maldives jail and compare the conditions and publish it.
Apparently Fauzee cannot speak Dhivehi and gave the
interview to TVM in Urdu. Fauzee has a wife and kids in
his island B. Hithaadhoo.
Fauzee looked a spitting
image of Usama bin Laden, no wonder Americans mistook
him for Gayyoom's friend Bin Laden. Locals are saying
that Fauzee has a special message to Gayyoom from Bin
Laden, which could be as old as 5 years old. Like Bin
Laden, Gayyoom is a terrorist too. Only difference is
that Gayyoom terrorises his own people and in broad
daylight whilst Bin Laden himself has no idea where his
men will strike. Locals are saying "we just wished if
the Americans had taken Gayyoom to Guantanamo Bay in the
same flight! That would have been wonderful! Gayyoom is
a terrorist and should be there!".
Breaking News
Another person brought to
hospital from Dhoonidhoo Prison
Male' - 15:10 - Confirm
reports are coming that another person has been brought
to IGMH around mid day and is being treated. It is
reported that the person is unconscious and has been
tortured.
Gayyoom's kill spree
appears to be on the rise.
We will bring more details
if and when available. Since the death of Muaviyath
Mahmood day before yesterday, there has been several
rumours about incidents in Dhoonidhoo but we could not
confirm those reports. All families with inmates in both
jail are encouraged to inquire about their well being
because allegedly some 7 inmates were involved in the
Muaviyath incident and some have even died. These
reports are unconfirmed.

Yaameen Abdul Gayyoom still calling the
shots at STO
Although
Mr Yaameen Abdul Gayyoom (aka Raagondi Raajaa) is no
longer the chairman of the board of directors at STO, he
has instructed his boy in Singapore, Ahmed Muneez who is
supposed to be working for STO, to buy a flat in the
heart of Singapore's business district in International
Plaza. Yaameen spent a lot of time with Muneez when the
whole royal family went for a holiday in Singapore
recently. The property that Raagondi Raajaa wants to buy
is the apartment right next to the STO owned apartment
where Muneez is staying right now.

We
must ensure that all MPs act responsibly especially our
so-called Reformists
History is repeating.
Constitution reform is underway; similar scenario is
unfolding like what happened twenty years before. It
seems Gayyoom knows the Maldivians better than any one
else. He is master of Maldivian politics and master of
deception.
Power hungry Gayyoom uses
his tactics testing the changing mentality of the new
generation. He finds nothing but the same hardcore and
conflicting ideological people who know only to say NO
for any thing if they feel it is not their interest.
Gayyoom has reason to believe that he is on the wining
side.

There
is no evidence to date to suggest that Shaaheen Hameed
has acted against the views he had reportedly expressed
in the International Report
Mariyam Mohamed seems to suggest that since Shaaheen
Hameed is presently the Deputy Speaker of the People's
Special Majlis, that he has "certainly changed sides"
and not seen by "many of his friends and associates as a
man of principle." With due respect, this is not an
objective assessment. This is because there is no
evidence to date to suggest that Shaaheen Hameed has
acted against the views he had reportedly expressed in
the International Report titled "The question of
democracy: Political development and its critics" by the
Washington Times.

Gayyoom's
security forces spying over pro-democracy MPs
Male'
- After the Majlis session yesterday, Male' Members
Ibrahim Ismail and Mohamed Shihab and Thaa Atoll member
Hassan Afeef were standing outside in the garden for a
casual talk. However, DO informants have confirmed that
Gayyoom's police in plain uniform were capturing their
moves to a camcorder. It is another sign of increase
intimidation by Gayyoom and his obsession with control.
Obviously, Speaker of the Majlis Ahmed Zahir has no
powers to protect any member that Gayyoom dislikes. It
is the people who can protect their MPs. There is
increased speculation that Gayyoom is going to make life
difficult for all the reformist MPs and might even
arrest some, citing national security concerns.

MTCC
Staff warned; collaborate with DO and you will be fired
Recently several staff of MTCC have got together and
exposed the problems in the company, one of the largest
public companies in Maldives. These articles that are
being published in DO have been creating unrest for the
top man in MTCC, Mohamed Ibrahim, who is the Managing
Director. Since he joined the company things have been
getting worse and the old "Team MTCC" spirit is now
lost.
MTCC Staff are now being warned that if anyone is caught
giving information to DO, they will get fired from the
job.
However, Team MTCC is confident that their mission will
be accomplished. They want better management,
transparency and accountability and Mohamed Ibrahim just
can't deliver that.
How desperate is the government to hide
the truth?
We can start from the Haveeru.
Haveeru is a news firm that has been working closely
with the government for several years. However due to
the need for the development of journalism, it had
become necessary for Haveeru to walk on the edge to give
a nudge to wake up this sleeping government. If I am not
wrong it must have been 12 year since Haveeru news
reporters have been asking the president when a law on
journalism will be made in this country.

Parliament
is supreme
The
Parliament and the Special Assembly are supreme with the
former in making, unmaking or remaking ordinary Laws and
the latter in Constitutional Laws. No one in the
parliament or Special Assembly, and for that matter, no
previous meeting of either body can make a Law or rule
binding on the subsequent parliament or Special Assembly
or meeting thereof. By implication, therefore, it is
surprising that the existing Special or Constituent
Assembly is having such a tough time to getting down the
procedural rules which shall determine the conduct of
the meetings. One can see that it is the presidency of
these meetings that is holding the business of a
Constitutional body to ransom to achieve some political
gains for the cronies, one of whom he is. This is a
manifest breach of the Constitution and Law.
